We recently had an opportunity to visit a lovely restaurant overlooking the Hudson River which is aptly named Shadows on the Hudson. After passing through a lengthy section of bustling urban renewal, we emerged into a tranquil riverside area of Poughkeepsie, New York where this fine dining establishment is perfectly located to afford optimum views of the Hudson.
The menu was diverse and totally outstanding. Our group tried quite a number of entrees, along with appetizers and selections from the raw bar, and each and every item was deemed very good. Being a lover of shellfish, my order was somewhat predictable. I chose the Maine Lobster Cocktail, followed by Scallop Risotto with kale, pomegranate and herbs and a nice California chardonnay. Others in the group tried Fried and Buffalo Calamari, Fettuccine Fra Diavolo and Salmon. The presentation of the food was very attractive. However, my daughter-in-law was disturbed by the fact that my lobster cocktail was so artfully arranged that it included the head and beady little eyes of the lobster that seemed to stare at her throughout her meal! The squeamish might want to give this item a pass. If I had one complaint, it would be that the wine selection should be expanded but, if you are a cocktail lover, you will undoubtedly be pleased with the array of interesting choices.
I have always been a lover of fine dining and fine wines. When you combine these pleasures with the company of family, friends, and beautiful scenery, how much better does it get?
