September 21st may be the official end of summer but, for many of us, summer concludes after Labor Day as our thoughts turn to fall. For me, that means it’s time to explore new hiking trails, visit outdoor produce stands to purchase crisp apples and tasty cider, go horseback riding on scenic trails graced by vibrant autumn leaves and, best of all, spend some quality time at wineries discovering and imbibing delicious wines. This past week, we spent a most enjoyable cool, fall day at Millbrook Vineyards and Winery picnicking on their beautiful grounds and savoring an outstanding wine. By the way, as some of you have already guessed, Millbrook, New York was the inspiration for the town of Mill Creek in A Woman Named Rio.
We arrived early in the afternoon and passed through a sea of healthy, picture-perfect vineyards that had clearly been treated with a lot of TLC. Then we parked by the winery adjacent to the picnic area where tables were socially distanced by the little lake surrounded by rolling hills and beautifully manicured acreage. The Millbrook Winery grounds exude the kind of tranquility and charm that immediately delight the senses and encourage one to linger….and we certainly ended up doing just that. After claiming a table under a shady tree, we set up our picnic basket which included pastrami style smoked salmon (cold salmon kicked up with the traditional pastrami blend of herbs and spices) to which we had added cream cheese and placed on bagels. This was accompanied by Greek orzo salad, white grapes and sweet nectarines. Oh yes, we also included a half-pound of turkey breast for our dog because Farrah is not fond of bagels. She prefers crusty Italian bread. After the table was set, it was time to embark on my quest to find the perfect wine.
Entering the winery, I perused the cooler and selected the 2019 Proprietor’s Special Reserve Chardonnay. Scott Koster, the Director of Sales, opened the wine and assured me that I had made a very good choice. After sampling the wine, I thoroughly agreed. I have always referred to Chardonnays with well-integrated oak and balanced acidity as being “the nectar of the gods.” Going forward, a couple of slots in my wine rack will be reserved specifically for this heavenly vintage.
After our meal, we took Farrah on a long walk through the grounds thoroughly enjoying this perfect autumn day. During these stressful times life may be challenging, but we can always enjoy the simple pleasures and the great outdoors. Good food, good wine, good company and good weather add up to a perfect day for me. How about you?
